ARCH 111-ARCHITECTURAL COMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES

Communication, visualization and representation techniques in different mediums. Architectural representation methods, tools and techniques, expression methods of design ideas, architectural elements and formal attributes. Orthographic projection, free-hand drawing, architectural photography, communication models in the digital medium.

Architectural Photography

"After attending the lecture 'On City, Architecture, and Photography,'Our task is to visit the buildings from the provided list, spend time exploring their spaces, and truly immerse ourselves in their context.  I plan to walk around each building, observing it from different angles and discovering viewpoints that highlight its unique characteristics and its relationship with the surrounding environment. By selecting these perspectives carefully, I aim to capture photographs that not only document the architecture but also tell a story about its spatial qualities and how it interacts with its immediate surroundings.  This process will allow me to apply the ideas from the lecture, using photography as a tool to analyze and interpret architecture in a deeper, more meaningful way."

Orthographic Projection

"Our task is to abstract the given image by enlarging it to the specified dimensions while maintaining its proportional relationships. The goal is to represent depth, light, and texture using only parallel lines, choosing one direction—horizontal, vertical, or angular.

I’ll carefully focus on the weight, quality, and spacing of the lines to convey the variations in light and shadow, as well as the textural elements of the image. This means paying close attention to how dense or sparse the lines are, how they interact, and how they create a sense of three-dimensionality.

It’s a challenge to translate the complexity of an image into such a minimal form, but it’s an exciting exercise in simplifying and abstracting visual information while preserving its essence."

FINAL

I will be focusing on a few key components to represent the design process clearly and effectively.  First, I’ll create a poster design that visually communicates the evolution of my design, showing the different stages and how the concept developed. The poster will include key visuals, diagrams, and brief explanations to guide the viewer through my process.  Additionally, I will produce an animation of a 3D construct, which will help showcase the final design in motion and give a better sense of its spatial qualities. This animation will highlight the movement, structure, and key features of the design.  Finally, I will establish a digital archive and blog where I can document the entire project. The blog will include detailed posts about the steps I took throughout the process, along with reflections and any challenges I faced. The digital archive will store all my work, including images, models, and sketches, creating a comprehensive record of my design journey. Moreover,I am expected to create an animation that showcases the design I developed in ARCH101. The goal is to highlight the design strategy, groups, units, and their relationships. I’ll explore the potential of animation as a medium and use the appropriate techniques to design the frames carefully.
